Instead of waterfalls or crowded viewpoints, Risnjak is about <strong>dense wilderness, quiet trails, and raw mountain terrain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For hikers, it sits somewhere between beginner-friendly forest walks and more serious mountain routes &#8211; making it one of the most versatile places to hike in Croatia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This guide covers the best routes, weather conditions, and what to realistically expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General Info<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Entrance fee:<\/strong> app \u20ac7 for adults off-season, app \u20ac10 in-season (July\u2013August) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Opening hours:<\/strong> Summer 8:00 AM \u2013 6:00 PM, Winter 9:00 AM \u2013 4:00 PM <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Where to buy tickets:<\/strong> At the Info Center in Crni Lug (also available online in advance) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Distance:<\/strong> 140 km from Zagreb, 35 km from Rijeka<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Park entrances:<\/strong> The park has two main access points:<br><br>1. <strong>Bijela Vodica<\/strong> (near Crni Lug), the main entrance with the info center, used for the Veliki Risnjak route, <br>2. <strong>Vilje<\/strong> (reached via Gornje Jelenje, then a forest road to the parking area), the access point on the Snje\u017enik\/Guslica side. A few things worth knowing before you go:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If fog rolls in on the ridge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t push forward hoping it clears. Stop, get your bearings using the marked trail signs (red-and-white markings), and if visibility drops below a few meters, wait it out in a sheltered spot rather than continuing blind. Risnjak&#8217;s forest sections are rewarding on their own, and turning back before the exposed terrain is always the safer call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to Pack<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Risnjak&#8217;s terrain shifts from forest trails to exposed, rocky ground near the summits, and the weather can change fast &#8211; so it&#8217;s worth packing properly even for shorter routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Essentials, year-round<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Layered clothing &#8211; even summer days can turn cold and damp near the ridge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A waterproof\/windproof shell &#8211; fog and light rain are common, even when the forecast looks clear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trekking poles &#8211; especially useful for the descent from Risnjak&#8217;s summit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More water than you think you&#8217;ll need &#8211; sources are limited on the higher routes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A charged phone and, ideally, a GPS device or an offline map &#8211; signal can be patchy near the summits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basic first aid kit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Seasonal additions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Spring\/Autumn:<\/strong> Extra insulating layer, gloves &#8211; mornings can be near freezing even when afternoons are mild<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Summer:<\/strong> Sun protection despite the cooler climate &#8211; UV exposure is still strong above the treeline. The many antennas visible at the summit led to constant speculation about their purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Various stories circulated \u2014 some claimed the entire mountain had been excavated and transformed into a base designed for use in the event of a nuclear war. After the Yugoslav People\u2019s Army (JNA) abandoned the site, the truth became clear. The mountain had indeed been heavily developed, with a network of tunnels and rooms spread across four underground levels. These facilities were built to support around 50 people living below ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The site was not immediately taken over by the Croatian Army, and for a period it was left unprotected, which led to extensive vandalism and looting. Much of the infrastructure was destroyed or stripped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, one building at the summit has been restored, and modern GSM antennas have been installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the area was previously restricted, the peak itself is not marked in the traditional mountaineering sense \u2014 there is no summit register or official stamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the views from the top are open and expansive in all directions. Particularly striking are the views toward the Risnjak ridge, including peaks like Veliki Risnjak, Snje\u017enik, and Jelenc. To the southwest, you can see U\u010dka, Fratar, Obru\u010d, and much of the Kvarner Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Source of the Kupa River<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Best for<\/strong>: Easy walkers, families, anyone wanting a lighter day in the park<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Duration<\/strong>: app 30\u201345 minutes (one way, from Razloge)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Start<\/strong>: Razloge or Kupari<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every highlight in Risnjak requires a summit push. The source of the Kupa River is one of the park&#8217;s most striking natural features &#8211; and one of its easiest to reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The river emerges from an oval, turquoise-colored lake, framed by cliffs roughly 100 meters high. The color and clarity of the water come from the karst geology beneath the park, and the setting has earned this stretch of the valley its nickname: the &#8220;Valley of Butterflies.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The walk down from Razloge follows a series of switchbacks through forest, with the lake appearing gradually as you descend. It&#8217;s a manageable route for most fitness levels, though it does mean a climb back up on the return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few practical notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After heavy rain, the approach to the spring can flood and become inaccessible &#8211; check conditions beforehand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The info point at Razloge\/Kupari only operates seasonally, from May to October<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring proper footwear even though this isn&#8217;t a summit route &#8211;
