While it isn’t as internationally famous as Triglav, it enjoys an almost legendary reputation among hikers thanks to its outstanding views, long approach, and noticeably smaller crowds.

Several routes lead to the summit, with one of the most popular passing via Cojzova Koča on Kokra Saddle.

Is Grintovec difficult?

Yes – but not because it’s technically demanding.

The standard route via Cojzova Koča does not involve any scrambling or via ferrata sections. What makes Grintovec challenging is the nearly 2,000 metres (6,400 ft) of elevation gain if you start from Kamniška Bistrica.

You’ll need good fitness, but in dry summer conditions the route presents no technical difficulties.

If there’s still snow on the mountain, however, the situation changes completely. In spring or late autumn, crampons and an ice axe are essential.

Unfortunately, Grintovec occasionally reminds us how quickly conditions can change in the Alps. A young Croatian hiker recently lost his life here after slipping on the snow. That’s why spring and autumn conditions should never be underestimated.

Starting from Kamniška Bistrica

My friend Matija (who took the photos in this article) and I started in Kamniška Bistrica, then continued to the V Koncu area, home to the lower station of the supply cable car serving Cojzova Koča.

Most of the ascent follows a forest trail with numerous switchbacks, gradually gaining elevation. As you climb higher, the forest becomes thinner and beautiful views of the surrounding Kamnik–Savinja Alps begin to open up.

Just before reaching Cojzova Koča, the terrain becomes steeper, with the final section crossing a scree slope to the mountain hut.

For us, this was a two-day trip, so besides our sleeping bags we were also carrying a stove and plenty of extra gear. That final climb through the scree turned into quite a workout.

Cojzova Koča on Kokra Saddle

At 1,793 metres, Cojzova Koča is one of the best-known mountain huts in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

It’s an excellent place to rest before the final ascent to Grintovec or to use as a base for exploring nearby peaks over several days.

Even from the hut’s terrace, you’ll already enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding ridges and valleys.

We visited in late winter, so the hut was closed. We spent the night in the winter room, where it was so cold that we actually regulated the temperature by opening the door – it was warmer outside than inside. I slept fully dressed inside my sleeping bag and only managed to warm up enough to take my jacket off after a few hours.

The final ascent

From Cojzova Koča, the trail quickly leaves the tree line behind.

As you approach the summit, the terrain becomes rockier, but technically it remains straightforward. The biggest challenge is simply the length of the climb and the constant uphill gradient.

The final section follows the broad ridge known as Streha, offering increasingly impressive views of the surrounding two-thousand-metre peaks.

It’s almost always windy on the summit, so even in midsummer you’ll appreciate having an extra layer.

When
