The highest peak in Slovenia, a national symbol, is the mountain every Slovenian climber needs to stand on at least once. I already covered the Krma Valley route in a previous post. This time, Pavle and I went for something different: up the “Tominškova Pot“, and down through “Čez Prag“.

Same mountain, completely different day.

We didn’t exactly ease into it, either. The day before, we’d already done Škrlatica up and down – Slovenia’s second-highest peak, right next door in the same valley. In hindsight, back-to-back big days in the Julian Alps is either a great way to build momentum or a great way to find out how tired your legs actually are on exposed terrain. If you want the details on that one, I wrote it up separately.

Video of the ascent:

Triglav via Tominškova Pot, down via Čez Prag: Quick Facts

Trailhead

Aljažev dom, Vrata Valley

Route

Up: Tominškova pot to Kredarica. Some guides argue the opposite order is safer for less experienced climbers, since Prag going up gets it over with early – but with a night’s rest (weeeell, not really rest – do NOT sleep at room 301) at Kredarica in between, we were comfortable doing the harder climbing first.

Either way, this isn’t a route to combine with a bad weather window or a late start.

Climbing Triglav via Tominškova Pot: Step by Step

Day One: Aljažev Dom to Kredarica via Tominškova Pot

We started from Aljažev dom in the Vrata Valley and climbed steadily through forest, then scree, then increasingly exposed rock, with Triglav’s north face looming overhead for most of the day. The cable sections start well before Kredarica and don’t really let up.

I was surprised just how scenic the route is – if you like to take photos, this is an amazing route for it. Prag is long, consistently exposed, and comes with a real mental tax after a night with little sleep and a summit push already behind you. Cable after cable, ledge after ledge – nothing individually is desperate, but the cumulative exposure and the fatigue add up. Especially in summer, since the sun is relentless.

Rough timing from Kredarica to Aljažev dom via Prag: around 5 hours if fast, more like 6 + on average — same ballpark as Tominškova, just a different kind of tired by the end.

A guide’s note: most incidents on routes like this happen on the descent, not the ascent – tired legs, fading concentration, and steep exposed terrain are a bad combination. If you’re gassed after the summit push, take the extra ten minutes at each rest stop. Prag will still be there in ten minutes. You want to still be there too.

Safety on Tominškova and Prag

Weather changes fast.
Afternoon thunderstorms are a real risk on both routes given how long you’re exposed on cable terrain. Start early, and build in enough margin to be off the ridge sections well before early afternoon.

Crowding still happens, even on the “harder” routes – Triglav is popular enough that queues form on cables regardless of which side you’re on, especially in July and August.

Early-season snow and ice can linger on both routes into June, and morning frost on the cables is common even in summer. Check current conditions before you commit – a route that’s “just” exposed in dry conditions turns genuinely dangerous with ice on the steel.

Mountain rescue insurance is worth having.
I mentioned this in the Krma post too, but it bears repeating for routes with this much exposure: Gorska reševalna zveza Slovenije can bill for helicopter evacuation if you’re not covered, and a UIAA-affiliated club membership usually includes worldwide rescue cost coverage as part of the deal.

Other Routes to Triglav

If Tominškova and Prag sound like more than you’re looking for, Triglav has gentler options:

Krma Valley – the easiest and most popular approach, long but straightforward until the final ridge. But if you’ve already stood on that summit once and want to see the mountain from a different angle, this combination is one of the best ways to do it. Just respect the exposure, watch the weather, and don’t rush the descent.

The sunrise alone is worth the extra effort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tominškova Pot harder than the Krma Valley route?

Yes. Tominškova Pot is more exposed and includes long protected sections with steel cables and pegs well before reaching the summit ridge. While technically straightforward in dry conditions, it requires much more confidence with heights than the Krma route.

Is Tominškova Pot harder than Čez Prag?

Many hikers consider Tominškova Pot slightly more demanding than Čez Prag because the exposed sections are longer and more continuous. Both routes require good footing and a head for heights.

Do I need a via ferrata set for Tominškova Pot?

I strongly recommend using a helmet and a via ferrata set. Although many experienced mountaineers climb without clipping in, the route is exposed for long stretches and proper safety equipment is a sensible choice.

Can beginners climb Triglav via Tominškova Pot?

Not as a first alpine objective. If you’re new to exposed mountain terrain, the Krma Valley route is generally a better introduction to Triglav.

How long does the climb take?

For most hikers, the route takes around 10–12 hours as a day hike, although many split the climb into two days by staying overnight in one of the mountain huts.

When is the best time to climb Triglav via Tominškova Pot?

The best conditions are usually between late June and September. Snow can remain well into early summer, and once snow is present the route becomes significantly more serious.

Is there water on the route?

No. There are no reliable water sources on Tominškova Pot itself, so carry enough water from the start or refill at the mountain huts. Or buy water at Kredarica, 7 euros per 1.5l bottle.

Which direction is better: up Tominškova and down Prag?

Many experienced hikers prefer exactly this combination. Tominškova offers an exciting ascent, while descending via Prag avoids down-climbing some of Tominškova’s longer exposed sections.

Is a guide recommended?

If this is your first exposed alpine route, or you’re unsure about protected climbing, hiring a licensed mountain guide is recommended. It makes the climb safer and lets you enjoy the experience without worrying about route-finding or technical sections.

Triglav via Tominškova Pot: Route Overview Triglav (2,864 m) doesn’t need much of an introduction if you’ve read this blog before.
