Best Hiking Trails on Medvednica (Zagreb) | Routes, Difficulty & Tips

Medvedgrad

Safety Notice for Visitors to Medvednica

Forest trails on the Zagreb side of Medvednica remain extremely dangerous and, in some areas, impassable.

Croatian Forests (Hrvatske šume) warn visitors about serious risks caused by a large number of fallen, damaged, cracked, and unstable trees and branches that may fall without warning. In addition, some sections of the trails have been completely destroyed due to severe weather.

Leustek Trail
The central section of the Leustek trail, from Lonjščina to Adolfovac and Vila Rebar, is especially critical. A large number of damaged trees have completely destroyed parts of the trail. This section requires both environmental and technical restoration, which is planned in the coming period.

Miroslavec area
The section from Šestinski Lagvić to Kraljičin Zdenac is extremely dangerous and currently impassable. Movement through this area is unsafe even for experienced hikers.

Just above the city of Zagreb rises Medvednica — a forested mountain that offers some of the most accessible and rewarding hiking in Croatia.

For visitors, it’s one of the easiest ways to step out of the city and into nature within less than an hour. For locals, it’s a year-round escape.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxed forest walk or a more demanding uphill route, Medvednica has trails for every level.

This guide covers the best hiking trails, what to expect, and how to choose the right route for your experience.

Why hike on Medvednica?

Medvednica is not a high mountain by alpine standards, but it offers something equally valuable — accessibility, variety, and atmosphere.

What makes it ideal:

  • Direct access from Zagreb
  • Well-marked trails
  • Dense forests that provide shade even in summer
  • Mountain huts (“planinarski domovi”) along many routes
  • Suitable for beginners and experienced hikers alike

It’s one of the best places in Croatia to start hiking, especially if you’re visiting for a short time.

Winter on Medvednica

Best hiking trails on Medvednica

Here are some of the most popular and worthwhile routes, depending on your level and what kind of experience you’re looking for.

Sljeme Summit Trail (via Leustek)

Best for: Beginner to moderate hikers who prefer a steady, non-steep ascent

Duration: ~2.5 hours (one way)

Elevation gain: ~650–700 m

Start: Gračani / Bliznec (Zagreb)

Leustek Trail is one of the most popular and accessible routes to the summit of Sljeme, designed for a gradual and comfortable ascent.

The path follows a consistent incline with no steep sections, making it easier than many other routes on Medvednica, though still long enough to require decent fitness.

Along the way, you’ll pass through dense forest, cross the mountain road a few times, and reach the Adolfovac shelter — a good spot for a short break before continuing toward the summit.

At the top, you can continue to Sljeme’s main area, with mountain huts, open meadows, and views over the surrounding region.

Bikčevićeva Trail

Best for: Moderate hikers

Duration: 1.15 hours (one way)

Elevation gain: ~500–600 m

Start: Bliznec (Zagreb)

Bikčevićeva Trail is one of the most popular routes on Medvednica, following a wide forest path with a consistent incline.

The trail is well-marked and not technically demanding, making it ideal for first-time hikers, casual outings, or anyone who prefers a solid training.

Along the way, you’ll walk through dense forest with occasional resting spots, eventually reaching mountain huts near the summit area, where you can take a break before continuing toward Sljeme.

Horvatove Stube

Best for: Moderate hikers looking for a short but unique and scenic experience

Duration: ~1.5–2.5 hours (combined with surrounding trails)

Elevation gain: ~100–150 m (stairs section only)

Start: Hunjka / Sljeme road access

Horvat’s 500 Steps are one of the most distinctive and scenic sections of Medvednica, built through a rugged karst landscape on the mountain’s northern side.

The trail features a series of stone steps carved into the terrain, passing caves, rock formations, and small viewpoints along the way. It’s not technically difficult, but the uneven terrain and steps require attention, especially in wet or slippery conditions.

Although the staircase itself is relatively short, it’s usually combined with surrounding hiking routes, making it part of a longer and more varied hike.

Along the route, you’ll encounter highlights like Medvednica Cave, forest viewpoints, and a quiet stream-side resting area, giving the hike a more “exploratory” feel compared to standard forest trails.

Slap Sopot Trail

Best for: Short hikes with a natural highlight

  • Duration: 1–2 hours
  • Elevation gain: low
  • Start: Markuševec area

This trail leads to one of Medvednica’s most interesting natural features — the Sopot waterfall.

It’s a good option if you want a shorter outing without committing to a full summit hike.

Autumn on Medvednica

Šestine – Medvedgrad

Best for: Family hikes. Easy hikers looking for a short scenic hike with a historic highlight.

Duration: ~45–60 minutes (one way)

Elevation gain: ~200–300 m

Start: Šestine (Zagreb)

The Šestine–Medvedgrad trail is a short and accessible hike leading to the medieval fortress of Medvedgrad, one of the most iconic viewpoints above Zagreb.

The route follows a steady forest path with a moderate incline, making it suitable for most fitness levels. It’s a great option if you want a quick escape into nature without committing to a full-day hike.

At the top, Medvedgrad offers panoramic views over Zagreb and the surrounding area, making it a popular destination for both hikers and casual visitors.

From here, you can either return the same way or continue further toward Sljeme if you’re looking for a longer hike.

When is the best time to hike Medvednica?

Medvednica is a year-round destination:

  • Spring: fresh greenery, ideal temperatures
  • Summer: shaded trails, but can be humid
  • Autumn: beautiful colors and crisp air
  • Winter: snow possible, creating a completely different experience

Each season offers a different atmosphere.

What to bring

Even though Medvednica is close to the city, preparation still matters.

Recommended:

  • Good hiking shoes (trails can be slippery)
  • Water (especially in summer)
  • Light layers (weather can change quickly)
  • Snacks or a stop planned at a mountain hut

Do you need a guide on Medvednica?

Many trails are well-marked and suitable for independent hiking.

However, a guided hike can make a big difference if:

  • You’re visiting Croatia for the first time
  • You want to avoid navigation mistakes
  • You prefer a more structured and relaxed experience
  • You’re interested in local knowledge, history, and hidden routes

A guide can also tailor the route to your fitness level and goals, making the experience more enjoyable and efficient.

Medvednica is one of the most underrated hiking destinations in Croatia.

It may not be the highest mountain, but it offers exactly what many hikers are looking for — accessible nature, beautiful forest trails, and a real escape from the city.

For first-time visitors, it’s often the perfect introduction to hiking in Croatia.
