If you’re in Zagreb and want to escape the city, you don’t need to go far. Within 20–60 minutes, you can reach forests, ridgelines, and proper mountain terrain.
Here are the best hikes near Zagreb, organized by time and difficulty.
Medvednica Forest Trails (Beginner-Friendly)

Location: Medvednica
Time: 2–3 hours
Difficulty: Easy
The fastest nature escape from Zagreb.
You’ll find:
- well-marked trails
- gentle elevation
- dense forest
Perfect if you:
- want a relaxed walk
- have limited time
- are new to hiking
You can take this as far as you want – you can spend a whole day going from location to location, hut to hut, or simply do a short 1-2 hours hike and back.
Tip: Avoid the main Sljeme routes on weekends—there are quieter options. Plus, you’ll wait in line for food and drinks at the huts like you are at a concert.
Samoborsko gorje (Underrated & Scenic)
Time: 1–5 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Just west of Zagreb, this area offers a completely different feel from Medvednica—more open views, varied terrain, and usually fewer people.

Best peaks to hike:
- Oštrc
One of the most popular hikes in the area. Steady climb, great views at the top, and a rewarding half-day route. - Okić
Historic. A hiking route (no climbing if you choose the standard path). You could do a short via ferrata (Žoharov put), and if you prefer rock climbing, there are some great lines here, rating from 4a to 7b. - Japetić
The highest peak in the area, with a forest ascent and a lookout tower offering wide views.
This region is ideal if you want:
- fewer crowds
- more variety in terrain
- a more “local” hiking experience
Advanced Day Hikes (Full Day)
Risnjak National Park
Time: 5–7 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
About 1.5–2 hours from Zagreb, Risnjak feels much more remote.
You’ll get:
- rugged terrain
- wide mountain views
- significantly fewer people
Best for:
- hikers with solid fitness
- those looking for something less touristy

Multi-Day / Wild Hiking
Velebit (2–3 Days)
Time: Multi-day
Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
For a true mountain experience, Velebit stands out.
This is:
- raw, exposed terrain
- long-distance routes
- unpredictable weather
Expect:
- full hiking days
- real wilderness
- very few crowds

What Should You Choose?
- Short on time? → Medvednica (2–4h)
- Classic Zagreb hike? → Sljeme
- Best variety + fewer people? → Samoborsko gorje (Oštrc / Okić / Japetić)
- More remote? → Risnjak
- Real adventure? → Velebit
The difference between an average hike and a great one here usually comes down to:
- route choice
- timing
- conditions
Even on the same mountain, the experience can change completely depending on how you plan it.
