Krn ascent (2,244 m) from Planina Kuhinja

Pavle pod Krnom

A huge amount of snow had fallen, so we decided it was the perfect time to head for Krn.

At 2,244 m, Krn is one of the best-known peaks in the Julian Alps and the highest mountain in the Krn range. Thanks to its relatively straightforward approach and outstanding panoramic views, it is a popular hiking destination throughout the year.

In winter or early spring, however, Krn becomes a much more demanding physical challenge. The route is not technically difficult, but breaking trail through deep snow for hours is never easy.

On the other hand, you’ll be rewarded with some truly spectacular views.

A short video from the ascent:

Starting from Planina Kuhinja

The most popular route to Krn begins at Planina Kuhinja, above the village of Vrsno. There is a large parking area at the trailhead, which currently costs €10 per day.

The trail gradually climbs through alpine meadows where cows peacefully graze during the warmer months before reaching the open mountain slopes that offer increasingly impressive views of the Julian Alps.

Towards Krn from Planina Kuhinja

We were either lucky or unlucky, depending on how you look at it.

There wasn’t a single person on the mountain, which meant we had to break trail through deep snow the entire way. That makes the ascent significantly slower and far more demanding than the summer route, but the atmosphere is absolutely incredible.

Krn is not famous only among hikers. During the First World War, fierce battles were fought here as part of the Isonzo Front, and even today you can still find trenches, bunkers and other military remains scattered across the mountain.

Winter ascent of Krn

As you gain elevation, the terrain becomes increasingly open.

Our day felt like the middle of winter rather than spring. There was snow everywhere, and it gave the whole climb a very special atmosphere.

Summit views

Krn is known for offering one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in Slovenia.

On a clear day, you’ll enjoy outstanding views across the Julian Alps and far beyond.

If the weather cooperates, it’s hard to imagine a better summit panorama.

How long does the hike take?

In summer, the approximate hiking times are:

  • Planina Kuhinja – Krn: about 3 hours
  • Krn – Planina Kuhinja: about 2 hours

In winter, expect the ascent to take considerably longer, especially if you’re the first party on the mountain or if the snow is deep.
